What is an operating system ?
This is an important part of operating system ;
Operating system is nothing but a program that manages the computer hardware. It also provides a basic for application program and acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware;

A computer system contains four levels ;
1. Hardware
2. Operating System
3. Application programs
4. Users

1. HARDWARE :
This is a visible part of computer system.
a. CPU ( Central Processing Unit , that is , which means the processor, registers, etc are contained for performing arithmetic operations, for executing instructions that are produced by programmer,still more functions.)

b. Memory ( that is , which is used to store the data and instruction or programs that are used to be executed in the system);

c. Input / Output Devices ( that is , which are mostly getting the user request from keyboard or mouse [input devices] and displaying the executed data by CPU or print the data by printer);


2. APPLICATION PROGRAM :

This is not a visible part , but we can absorb , that is , text editor [we cannot see any text editor's shape as a hardware device, such as Hard disc which is round shape like a CD ] . but we can absorb which is used to writing programs by high level programs.

example :
Text editors, Assemblers, compilers, data base system ,MS word , any application programs.

A computer has a many resources[ that is , hardware and software , so we can view an operating system as a resource allocator ]; these resources may be required for problem solving [such as CPU time, memory space, file-storage space, I/O devices ]........... so operating system acts as the manager of these resources . .................................
then OS decide which user[ more than one user] or which resources [ I/O devices ,Main Memory(which is fast , but all data are deleted while the power off, we need to know , all data and programs are executed after bringing into this memory ) ]
need to be accessed at the time of execution ;


The OS is designed to maximize resource utilization;
